Escalation and Resolving Professional Difference

When we are working with children inevitably situations will arise when workers from one agency feel that the actions, inaction, or decisions of another agency do not adequately safeguard or promote the welfare of a child. It’s important that these situations are quickly resolved in the best interests of the child. The Escalation and Resolving Professional Difference Procedure outlines the steps that need to be taken to challenge and where necessary, escalate your concerns.

National Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews (CSPRs) continue to draw attention to the importance of interagency communication and have identified an apparent reluctance to challenge interagency decision making with concerns that were not followed up with robust challenge and escalation which may have altered the professional response and the outcome for the child.

In response to our own learning, the safeguarding partners in North Tyneside promote a culture which encourages and supports constructive challenge within and between organisations; acknowledging the important role that challenge can play in safeguarding children. Effective ‘working together’ depends on a culture of open and honest relationships between agencies; where different professional perspectives are welcomed and given serious consideration by professionals who want the best outcomes for children and young people.

It is essential that everyone working with children not only understands the Escalation and Resolving Professional Difference Procedure but also knows where to get advice and support from their organisation in using the procedure.

Remember, professional challenge, and where necessary escalation, is a positive activity and a sign of good practice and effective multi-agency working.
